Burn Calories Dancing!

Posted on May 6, 2010 by No Comments

So I was so psyched about my Swing dancing class that I decided to blog about dancing. It can be a great way to do cardio and have fun at the same time (just check out how the celebs sweat it out on Dancing With The Stars!) And best of all, you can do it in the privacy of your own home- in your pjs if you want to. You can buy great dancing DVDs at www.collagevideo.com and www.activevideo.com or rent them from your local library, Blockbuster and NetFlix. If you want classes, check out your local Y or dance studios. You can get lessons pretty reasonably there.

Here is a list of fun dancing options (and some funny ones) and how much the typical 150 lb. person would burn in an hour.

Hip Hop: 327 calories
Jazz: 327 calories
Polka: 306 calories
Jitterbug: 327 calories
Twist: 327 calories
Square: 306 calories

Girls and Strength Training

Posted on May 4, 2010 by No Comments

I’m a huge advocate for strength training as a whole but feel that it’s critical for girls to do for both physical and mental reasons. It boosts body image, gives girls confidence, increases metabolism, reduces injury, reduces osteoporosis in later years and establishes a healthy and positive fitness pattern. The American College of Pediatrics has now ok’d kids to begin strength training as young as 7. The key is to start with body weight exercises then progress to free weights and machines. To start your girl on a program visit your local gym or talk to the gym teacher or coach about a program. Girls love to have company while working out so it’s great if you can join in with her or enlist a friend! You can also order my dvd made especially for girls. Here’s the link to it on my site: http://larysafit.com/store.asp

Feel free to write me with any questions!

Drink, Be Merry….And Fit

Posted on May 4, 2010 by No Comments

The weather gets warm and you feel like partying! It’s my job to keep you guys from packing on the pounds when you party. Here is a list of the most common alcoholic beverages and their caloric content. Remember that the best way to keep the calories low is to mix alcohol with seltzer or diet soda, and add lots of ice! Lemon and limes always help to make things interesting without adding calories. FYI – 250 ml = 1 Cup.

Feel free to share some of your favorite beverage recipes with everyone on Fit Club!

Thx and salud!!
